コース詳細 |
Lesson 1: Patient doctor interaction: role playing
A patient presents with the following symptoms:
Thirsty
Increased appetite
Frequent urination
Unstable weight (gains and losses)
After listening to the patient (played by the teacher), describe the symptoms, the doctor (played by the student) asks questions, makes a diagnosis, explains the diagnosis to the patient and suggests a course of treatment. The course of treatment may include additional tests. Also, the doctor answers any questions the patient asks during the course of the diagnosis and suggested course of treatment.
Cultural/Professional Points:
Most non-Japanese patients are interested in learning as much as possible about the doctor’s diagnosis and suggested treatment. They usually ask their physicians many questions. This may be different from typical Japanese patients who are accustomed to taking a more passive role in the doctor/patient relationship. Non-Japanese patients will appreciate physicians that listen to and answer their questions, and this is an important facet of cross-cultural medical settings.
Lesson 2: Communicating with other medical professionals: medical case presentation
Based on Lesson 1 (or an actual patient), the physician (played by the student) will prepare a medical case and present it. A colleague (played by the teacher) will ask questions and discuss the case with the physician.
Lesson 3: Reading medical journals: discussion of medical article (topic of interest to the student)
The student will provide a topic of interest, and a related medical article will be selected for discussion. Article will be provided prior to the scheduled lesson. Alternatively, the student may select a medical article for discussion.
Lesson 4: Participating in international medical conferences: discussion of recent medical news (area of interest to the student)
The student will provide a topic of interest, and related medical news (abstract, article, recent report and/or information regarding new treatments) will be selected for discussion. Materials will be provided prior to the scheduled lesson. Alternatively, the student may select material for discussion.
Lesson 5: Student selects one of the previous lesson plans
The student may select any of the lesson plans used above and a new lesson will be designed by the teacher. |
