Q1: Why do I need to register my personal profile?
A1: Students will be able to search teacher profiles based on 5 star ratings, interests, hobbies, experience, education, availability, lesson fees, etc. After students narrow down their teacher list to a few teachers by using MANABI's teacher search system, they will at your profile carefully to make their final decision. We have found that students are most likely to choose teachers with similar interests/hobbies. Thus, how you write your personal profile is extremely important in attracting students.

Q2: What do you mean by "setting my own price per lesson?"
A2: Though you will have to offer your first three 30 minute lessons (25 minute lesson plus 5 minute feedback writing) at a per lesson rate of $5 or under, you will be able to set your own price after this trial period. Please note that you will be rated by your students during these three trial lessons.
The crux of MANABI's business model is that teachers set their own prices, allowing those who perform well to command even higher premiums. Students provide teacher ratings/comments that other students can leverage in selecting which teachers provide the best match for their learning goals.

Q3: How can I change my per lesson rate?
A3: You may change your per lesson rate anytime by accessing your MANABI account after registering as a MANABI teacher. Please note that there are two parts in the price setting. First is the free conversation lesson. Typically, students first take free conversation lessons with several teachers and then decide on one or two teachers from whom they will take MANABI courses. Then, the students typically ask teachers to create lesson plans based on their needs. This is the second part of the price setting. You will be asked to upload a course (5 or 10 lessons) you have created in your profile and set your own price for the course you created. You will be able to set different prices for each course.

Q4: How do I register my available time slots?
A4: By logging into your account, you will be able to set either fixed weekly available time slots or day to day available time slots in your own time zone. This schedule will be automatically transformed into Japanese time when students book your time slots. You will be able to view the heavily demanded time slots from students in your own time zone when registering your availability.

Q5: Do I have to create my own lesson plans based on student needs?
A5: Yes and No. MANABI will provide basic lesson plans which you will be able to upload into your own course profile. However, it is entirely up to you whether you will use these lesson plans. Teachers who create excellent lesson plans will attract more students and will stand out. Also, note that the goals of learning English for each student are different; thus it is more advantageous to create custom made lesson plans for students rather than using the basic plans MANABI offers. You may charge different rates for each lesson plans.
Please note that the materials you upload must be copyright free. MANABI will take no responsibility if there is a copyright issue your uploaded courses.

Q7: How will I know when I receive lesson requests from students?
A7: You will receive an e-mail from MANABI once a student has booked one of your time slots. You will be asked to log into your MANABI account and accept/decline the lesson request.

Q8: What is the deadline to accept lesson requests?
A8: 12 hours before the scheduled lesson is the deadline to accept a lesson request. Students can only book lessons 24 hours in advance.
Top

Q9: Is there any cancellation charge if I decide to cancel a lesson?
A9: You may cancel your lesson up until 12 hours before the scheduled lesson. If you decide to cancel after the 12 hour deadline, you will be charged a $2 cancellation fee which will be deducted from your monthly earnings. You may cancel up until 1 hour before the lesson.

Q10: Do I call the students or do the students call me?
A10: You will call the students using MANABI's telephony system. You will be given a toll free number and an access code to log into the system. After you log in, you will dial the student phone number written in your lesson schedule page.

Q11: How long is each lesson?
A11: Each lesson is 25 minutes long followed by a 5 minute feedback registration time. This means that you will be paid for a 30 minute lesson.
Top

Q12: Can I e-mails my students before the actual lessons?
A12: Once a student books your time slot, you will be able to communicate with the student using our one-on-one discussion board. You may send files via e-mail to students but you will need to ask the student for his/her e-mail address.
Top

Q13: What if the student does not answer the phone?
A13: If students do not answer the phone, please leave a voicemail stating that you will call back in 5 minutes. Please try this again. You are no longer responsible after 10 minutes past the scheduled time.
Top

Q14: What if I forget to call the student?
A14: You will be charged a $2 penalty for not calling students. Also, please be aware that the student will be rating you on many dimensions. If you do not call the student, the student may write that you are irresponsible as a comment in your profile which other students will be looking at when choosing teachers. In order to prevent a scenario like this, please make sure you call students on time.

Q15: How do I register feedback after the lesson?
A15: You will be asked to provide feedback after each lesson by accessing your MANABI account and by clicking on the feedback page. Giving quality feedback to students is important since students will write about how rich your feedback is when commenting about the teacher. This student feedback will be shared with other students.
Top

Q16: Do I receive feedback from students after each lesson?
A16: Yes you will. The feedback you obtain from students will have five parts:
  1. Did the student like the topic of the lesson?
  2. Was the level of the lesson appropriate?
  3. Was the teacher's talking speed appropriate?
  4. Did you want to talk more? Did you want the teacher to talk more?
  5. Additional comments.

Q17: Will I be able to see how students have rated me?
A17: Yes and No. The rating consists of two parts: a five star rating & specific comments about your performance. You will be able to view your five star rating after three students have entered it. You will not be able to view the specific comments each student made about you since students will not provide honest feedback if teachers will be able to look at them.

Q18: Who pays for the phone bills?
A18: MANABI does. You dial a toll free number and enter an access code to log into our telephony system. All you have to do is to dial this number and not worry about the phone charges!
Top

Q19: How do I collect my lesson fees?
A19: MANABI will send you a check for the lesson fees on a monthly basis. We will issue a check at the end of each month for the lessons conducted in the previous month. This means that we will send you a check at the end of October for the lessons conducted in September. You will be able to view your "Monthly Earnings" in your MANABI account.
